Working principle

Radar measurement is based on the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) principle. The radar emits electromagnetic waves from the top of the tank. After the waves are reflected by the medium, they are received by the radar. The frequency difference δf between the received signal and the transmitted signal is proportional to the distance R to the medium surface:

R = C * δf / (2 * K)

where:

  • C = speed of light
  • δf = frequency difference
  • K = frequency modulation slope

Since the speed of light C and the modulation slope K are known, by estimating the frequency difference δf, the distance R from the radar installation position to the material surface can be obtained. Then, by subtracting the empty height (the distance from the radar to the material surface) from the known total height H of the tank, the material level height is derived.
